Students who are currently enrolled or have previously completed or are currently pursuing a degree at McGill are not eligible. However, former McGill students who have completed a graduate degree elsewhere and visiting students who are studying at another university can apply.
Applicants must have a first-class academic record according to McGill University’s criteria. This means they should have a GPA of 3.7 (or 3.5 in Law) in each of the last two years of full-time study at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
To apply for admission to a program, applicants should send their application package to the department or academic unit where they plan to study. The department may have an internal deadline that is earlier than the GPS deadline, so it’s a good idea to contact them directly for more information about the submission process.
The application package should include the application form, two letters of reference from external referees who will comment on the applicant’s academic or research accomplishments and potential (the referees must send the letters directly to the academic unit), and a statement from the proposed supervisor. The supervisor’s statement should discuss how the applicant’s proposed project integrates with their research program, the available sources of funding for the research program, and the available resources such as space, facilities, equipment, and access to required expertise.
To apply for the Tomlinson Doctoral Fellowships, applicants must include official transcripts or certified copies of their university-level studies, both graduate and undergraduate. They must also have an admissions letter and a funding letter already.
If selected, the department or academic unit will submit the application package, along with all other required documents, to GPS on behalf of the applicant. It’s important to note that application documents should not be submitted directly to GPS.
The nomination process for faculty and staff is available on the Faculty and Staff website.
